The perineum is the area that is most stressed during childbirth . When performed regularly and correctly, perineal massage promotes the elasticity and stretchability of the perineal tissue, thus specifically preparing the perineum for birth. Massage also helps prepare for birth not only physically but also mentally.

Application of perineum massage oil

Many pregnant women initially can’t imagine how much their birth canals will expand during labor. Some women think they’re “too narrow” or that the baby “would never fit through there.” However, perineal massages soften the perineal tissue and make it more stretchy. In addition, physical experiences such as palpating and feeling the birthing space during perineal massage can allay fears. Perineal massage therefore helps make the perineal tissue more elastic and to prepare for birth.

Starting at the 34th week of pregnancy, you can massage your perineum three to four times a week . Of course, your partner can also do the perineal massage. Just experiment and find what works best for you. Make sure your fingernails are short and well-cleaned before massaging yourself.

How to perform the perineal massage:

1. First, apply a few drops of perineal massage oil to your perineum. Note that this oil is usually intended for external use only. You don’t need any oil internally because your vagina is naturally moist.
2. Then massage both sides next to and under the labia majora in small circular movements to slowly warm the tissue.
3. Now insert your thumb two to three centimeters into your vagina. Stretch the tissue between your thumb and index finger.
4. Then massage the perineum in small circular motions. Imagine a clock face: At the anus, it’s 6 o’clock, and at the vaginal opening, it’s 12 o’clock. Massage from 6 o’clock to 3 o’clock, and from 6 o’clock to 9 o’clock.
5. Finally, gently stretch downwards with your thumb towards 5 o’clock and 7 o’clock.

The massage should last approximately 5 to 10 minutes. During the massage, you will feel light to strong pressure, depending on the intensity of the perineal massage. This sensation is similar to the stretching pain before the baby’s head emerges during labor. Over time, you will likely find that you can let go more and more, and that it becomes easier for you to allow this pressure and stretching.

However, if you experience severe pain or bleeding, you should stop the massage immediately and seek medical advice.
